Axis 2 Rotary AC Motor with Pinion for ABB IRB 6700 Manipulators

Specifications

Part Number 3HAC055450-003
Brand ABB
ABB Spare-Part Name Rot. ac motor incl p. — rotary AC motor including pinion
Category Rotary AC servo motor with pre-mounted pinion — manipulator axis-2 drive
Definition An ABB rotary AC servo motor supplied with the pinion already mounted on the motor shaft, delivered as one assembly for the axis-2 drive of the ABB IRB 6700 manipulator.
Function Drives axis 2 — the lower-arm swing joint — of the IRB 6700. Working with the controller and the axis-2 drive unit, it converts electrical input into controlled joint rotation while the built-in feedback device reports rotor position back for closed-loop control.
Axis Axis 2 — the lower-arm joint. ABB's IRB 6700 product manual states that when the holding brake of this motor is released, the lower arm becomes movable and may fall, so the arm must be secured before the motor is removed.
Robot Compatibility We confirm the robot compatibility for your unit before supply — send us the part number and the machine it came from.
Replaced Product ID (OLD) 3HAC043453-003 — listed as the replaced product ID for this article number in ABB spare-part data.
Cross-Reference Warning We confirm the cross-reference warning for your unit before supply — send us the part number and the machine it came from.
Motor Type A / B ABB's IRB 6700 product manual has an identification table that maps installed motors to type A or type B by article number, and states that those numbers identify the installed motor and cannot be used for ordering spare parts. Spare-part numbers come from the separate spare-parts manual, which is why this article number is not one of the identification numbers in that table.
Assembly Motor and pinion supplied as one matched assembly. ABB's replacement procedure requires the motor pinion to be mated correctly to the gear of the gearbox during installation.
Installation Axis-2 joint of the IRB 6700 manipulator, meshing with the axis-2 gearbox
Handling Weight Product net weight 27.5 kg. The ABB IRB 6700 product manual states that the axis-2 motor weighs 28 kg and that all lifting accessories must be sized accordingly.
Net Weight 27.5 kg
Dimensions 341 mm (depth / length) x 178 mm (height) x 178 mm (width)
Rated Output / Torque We confirm the rated output / torque for your unit before supply — send us the part number and the machine it came from.
Electrical Ratings We confirm the electrical ratings for your unit before supply — send us the part number and the machine it came from.
Customs Tariff Number Classified for your destination at quotation — send us your part number and we confirm the HS code on the invoice.
Country of Origin Stated on the commercial invoice. Send us your part number and we confirm the origin for your shipment.
Condition New original or used original. Please confirm the condition with us before ordering.

Industrial Applications

  • Heavy-payload material handling — transferring large castings, forgings and steel parts between stations on IRB 6700 cells.
  • Spot welding and large-body assembly in automotive body shops, where axis 2 carries the highest static load of any joint in the cycle.
  • Machine tending — loading and unloading CNC machining centres, presses and injection moulding machines.
  • Palletizing and depalletizing of heavy packaged goods at end-of-line.
  • Foundry and forge part transfer under high-duty-cycle conditions, including Foundry Plus protected robots.
  • Scheduled axis-2 motor renewal during major overhaul, or replacement after an axis-2 drive fault, brake fault or feedback fault.

Design Purpose

Axis 2 is the joint that swings the lower arm of the robot forward and back. It carries the weight of everything above it — upper arm, wrist, tool and payload — and it does so at the longest lever arm in the machine. The torque demand at that joint is therefore the highest in the manipulator, which is why ABB supplies the axis-2 motor as a dedicated article rather than a general-purpose servo, and why it is delivered with the pinion already mounted on the shaft: the pinion is the interface that transmits motor output into the axis-2 gearbox, and making it part of the delivered assembly removes a press-fit step from the field replacement.

The design detail that matters most to a buyer is not the motor itself but the versioning around it. ABB's IRB 6700 documentation splits the installed motors into type A and type B, identified by article number and visually by whether the motor flange carries an evacuation feature. The type B flange includes evacuation specifically to reveal failure of the primary sealing between the gearbox and the motor — an early-warning path for gearbox oil migrating into the motor. ABB is explicit that the article numbers in that identification table are for identifying what is installed and cannot be used to order spare parts; spare-part numbers come from the separate spare-parts manual. In practice this means 3HAC055450-003 has to be matched by article number, robot variant and serial number — not by "axis-2 motor for IRB 6700" alone.

Before you order and before you install
  • Confirm the variant and motor type first: the IRB 6700 family covers many payload variants and ABB documents different axis-2 motors by variant and by type A / B. Read the robot type in System Info on the FlexPendant or from the nameplate, and send us the serial number before ordering.
  • Do not order by axis number alone: 3HAC057542-003 is the axis-2 motor with pinion for the IRB 6640 platform, not for this one. A shared description does not make two articles interchangeable.
  • Secure the lower arm before releasing the brake: ABB warns that when the holding brake of the axis-2 motor is released, the lower arm becomes movable and may fall. De-energize and lock out the robot, then support the arm mechanically.
  • Size the lifting gear for 28 kg: ABB states the axis-2 motor weighs 28 kg and that all lifting accessories must be sized accordingly. Use the specified motor lifting accessory and handle the unit as a heavy part.
  • Use guide pins in pairs, and the correct removal tool: ABB specifies guide pins fitted in opposite holes and removal tools used in pairs, with the tool size depending on motor type A or B. Excessive force when parting or mating the motor and gearbox can damage the gears.
  • Mate the pinion correctly: the motor pinion must be properly meshed with the gear of the gearbox during fitting, and the cable exit must face the correct way.
  • Foundry Plus units: if the motor is a new spare part on a Foundry Plus robot, the evacuation-hole protection filter must be replaced with the transparent plug / sight glass enclosed with the spare part before the motor goes into service.
  • Leak-down test and calibration afterwards: perform the leak-down test per the product manual, then verify the axis-2 position reference and repeatability before returning the robot to production.
  • Qualified personnel: axis-2 motor replacement is manipulator service work that must follow the applicable ABB robot product manual.

Common Failure Modes

  • Overcurrent or overheat tripping — the drive unit reports motor overload after sustained heavy-duty cycles at axis 2.
  • Feedback-device fault — loss of position feedback, giving axis-2 position drift or a fault during homing.
  • Holding-brake failure — the lower arm sags or drops when the servo is switched off.
  • Gearbox oil entering the motor — primary sealing between the gearbox and the motor fails. This is the failure mode the type B motor flange evacuation is designed to reveal.
  • Abnormal noise or vibration from axis 2 — worn pinion teeth, bearing damage, or contamination inside the motor.
  • Insulation degradation or ground fault — the axis-2 drive trips as soon as the motor is enabled.
  • Wrong article fitted — ordered by axis number or robot model without checking the variant, the motor type, or the replaced-product cross-reference.

Alarm codes for this unit are shown on the controller display. Send us the fault code and we confirm the diagnosis and the matching spare part.
