The axis-1 motor converts electrical energy from the drive unit into controlled rotation of the robot’s base, swinging the entire arm and payload through the working envelope. Because axis 1 carries the highest inertia of any joint — the full robot structure plus the payload — the motor and pinion are factory matched to the axis-1 gearbox to keep backlash within tolerance and ensure repeatable base positioning under heavy load. The built-in resolver/encoder feeds precise rotor position back to the IRC5 controller for smooth, coordinated base motion.
