Serial Measurement Board Box for Motor Units — Technical Overview

This is the serial measurement board box supplied with ABB Motor Units, not the measurement board on the robot itself. ABB offers pre-engineered motor unit packages — complete with cabling, the SMB box and safety options — for positioners, track motion rails, indexing conveyors, servo guns and other external axis applications. This article is the measurement box from that package: it collects the position data from the motor unit's measurement device and passes it back to the robot controller over a serial link.

Specifications

Product Category Robot part — serial measurement board box supplied with ABB Motor Unit packages for external axes
Brand ABB (ABB Robotics)
Product Name SMB box/MU
Part Number 3HAC040654-001
Replaced Product ID (OLD) 3HAC040321-001. If your motor unit documentation or the label on your existing box carries the old number, this is the successor article.
Function Houses the serial measurement board for an ABB Motor Unit: it takes the position data from the motor unit's measurement device and transfers it to the robot controller over a serial link
Definition An enclosed box assembly supplied as part of ABB's standardised motor unit packages. It is the measurement interface for an external axis motor unit, not the SMB board fitted inside the robot manipulator.
Application ABB Motor Units for workpiece positioners, track motion rails, indexing conveyors, servo guns and other external axis applications (per ABB's Motor Units documentation)
Net Weight 4.16 kg (gross weight 4.16 kg)
Dimensions 340 mm (D) × 120 mm (H) × 200 mm (W)
Country of Origin Czech Republic
Customs Tariff Number 85371098
Part Type New
Detailed Technical Parameters Not published in the spare-part data, and the voltage, interface and axis-count figures circulating on reseller pages conflict with one another, so we do not quote them here. Send us your motor unit type and we will confirm what applies to your installation.

Industrial Applications

  • Workpiece positioners — the rotary and tilting tables that present the part to the robot, which is the application ABB names first for its motor units.
  • Track motion rails and robot carriers — where the robot itself travels along a floor or gantry axis.
  • Indexing conveyors — indexed transfer lines built on motor units rather than on a fixed drive.
  • Servo guns — servo-actuated welding guns treated as a controlled external axis.
  • Turntables and high-power rotary axes — the larger end of the motor unit range is described by ABB for high-power applications such as turntables.
  • MultiMove and coordinated cells — any cell where the controller coordinates the robot with one or more driven external axes.

Design Purpose

A robot's own axes all terminate at the manipulator, so one measurement board in the robot base can collect every joint's position data and send it to the controller as a single stream. An external axis breaks that assumption: a positioner, a track rail or an indexing conveyor is a separate mechanical unit, often metres away from the robot base, with its own motor and its own measurement device. Running raw measurement wiring back to the robot's board is exactly what the SMB concept exists to avoid, so ABB gives the motor unit its own box and that box talks to the controller over the same kind of serial link.

The box is also part of a deliberate standardisation decision. ABB supplies its motor units as pre-engineered packages — motor, gear unit, cabling, this measurement box and safety options — delivered with predefined CAD models and configuration files, and it states plainly that because they are standard, the units are cost efficient and easily available as spare parts. For a maintenance team that is the practical point: the measurement interface for an external axis is a catalogue item rather than a one-off build, and the old article number has a defined successor rather than an orphaned part.

Do not confuse it with the SMB on the robot. That board (for example 3HAC031851-001, SMB-unit DSQC 633A) is a bare board of roughly half a kilogram inside the manipulator. This is a boxed assembly of 4.16 kg supplied for the motor unit. They are different parts serving different positions in the measurement chain.

Before you replace this box: isolate and lock off the controller and the external axis before opening the enclosure or disturbing the connectors. As with other units in the ABB measurement chain, this box is associated with the retention of revolution counter data while the controller is powered down — take a system backup and confirm the condition of the backup power before starting. Record the connector positions and cable entries as you remove them, and plan for the external axis to be checked and referenced afterwards, not just for the swap.

Common Failure Modes

Symptoms that typically lead to this box being checked or replaced:

  • The external axis loses its position reference — the controller asks for it to be re-referenced, or reports that counter data is not updated.
  • Counter data lost after the controller has been powered down — usually retention and backup power rather than the board itself.
  • Communication fault on the measurement link for the external axis — the controller reports it cannot exchange data with the measurement unit.
  • No position data, or unstable position data, from the external axis — the axis will not hold its reference or drifts during a cycle.
  • Intermittent faults that follow the movement of the axis — a track or positioner that fails at particular points in its travel often points at the flexible cabling or the connector rather than the board.
  • Moisture, oil, dust or corrosion inside the enclosure — external axes on weld cells, washdown lines and floor-mounted tracks see a harsher environment than the inside of a manipulator.
  • Damaged connector, seal or cable entry after a collision, after the axis has been worked on, or after years of continuous flexing.
  • The whole cell stops on a measurement fault — in a coordinated cell, one external axis losing its reference stops the coordinated motion, not just that axis.

Why Choose Us

  • Genuine ABB part, supplied against part number 3HAC040654-001.
