The module does more than step the voltage down. It separates the controller's electronics from whatever the plant mains is doing, and it divides the 24 V DC output so that a short or overload on one part of the cabinet does not necessarily remove power from the main computer. That separation is what makes the failure behaviour of an IRC5 manageable rather than catastrophic: the controller can report what has dropped instead of simply going dark.
Because it is the bottom layer, it is also the module whose symptoms are most often misread. A supply that has drifted out of tolerance produces exactly the kind of intermittent behaviour that gets blamed on the main computer, the axis computer or the drives — random restarts, a controller that boots only sometimes, faults that appear once the cabinet warms up. Checking the supply rails first is faster and cheaper than replacing boards further up the chain. The unit itself is passively cooled and has no moving parts, so its main ageing mechanism is simply heat over years of continuous service.
