In a standard IRC5 configuration, the DSQC 663 main drive unit carries the robot's own six axes. When a cell needs more driven axes than that, the system is extended with one or more DSQC 664 additional drive units. The extra axes may be mechanical units outside the robot — a track that moves the whole robot along a floor rail, a positioner that turns the workpiece — or they may belong to a second manipulator in a MultiMove cell that shares the same controller.
Like the main drive unit, this module converts DC bus power into the controlled variable-frequency output that drives a servo motor. Because it sits in the same motion power path, a fault on an additional drive unit can trigger the system safety interlock and stop all robot motion, not just the axis it drives — so in practice its failure is as disruptive to the cell as a main drive fault.
Maintenance notes for external axis installations: recalibrate the zero position of positioners and guide rails periodically, since long-term external axis operation accumulates error; check high-voltage power cable connectors at regular intervals, because the repeated movement of an external axis can loosen them through vibration; and keep the cabinet sealed, cleaning module surfaces with dry air to prevent dust build-up.
