Axis 2 Rotary AC Servo Motor with Pinion — Technical Overview

Specifications

Category Industrial robot servo motor — axis motor with pre-installed pinion
Brand ABB
Function Drives axis 2 (upper arm) rotation of ABB IRB 6640 robots. Works together with the IRC5 controller and the axis-2 drive unit to deliver torque and closed-loop position control under heavy-payload operation.
Definition ABB OEM rotary AC servo motor supplied with a pinion pre-mounted on the motor shaft. ABB type designation Std / Foundry+ 6961W / 19Nm — designed as a direct replacement for the original axis-2 motor in IRB 6640 robots. This part supersedes the older references 3HAC056855-001 and 3HAC033163-001.
Series Compatibility ABB IRB 6640 industrial robots, axis 2. Suitable for both Standard and Foundry+ rated robots (Std / Foundry+ designation). Please confirm your robot model, axis, and environmental class before ordering.
ABB Type Designation Std / Foundry+ 6961W / 19Nm (Standard and Foundry+ rated, 6961 watts, 19 Nm)
Net Weight 33 kg
Net Dimensions (L × H × W) 410 × 180 × 180 mm
Pinion Pre-installed and dynamically matched to the axis-2 gearbox. No separate gear pressing required at installation.
Country of Origin Czech Republic (per ABB official listing)

Replaced Product IDs (OLD) 3HAC056855-001 and 3HAC033163-001

Industrial Applications

  • Heavy-payload material handling — moving large castings, forgings, and steel parts between workstations.
  • Machine tending — loading and unloading CNC machining centers, presses, and injection molding machines.
  • Spot welding and large-body assembly in automotive body shops.
  • Palletizing and depalletizing of heavy packaged goods at end-of-line.
  • Foundry and forge part transfer — the Foundry+ rating allows the motor to operate in elevated ambient temperatures and dirty environments typical of casting and forging cells.

Design Purpose

The motor converts electrical energy from the axis-2 drive unit into controlled mechanical rotation of the robot's upper arm. The integrated pinion meshes directly with the axis-2 gearbox, transmitting torque to the upper arm while the built-in resolver/encoder feeds back precise rotor position to the IRC5 controller. Because ABB ships the motor and pinion as a single matched assembly, no gear-pressing is required at installation and the backlash stays within factory tolerance.

The Std / Foundry+ designation indicates the motor has been qualified by ABB for both Standard and Foundry+ rated IRB 6640 robots, making it suitable for harsh industrial environments where elevated temperatures, dust, or contamination would normally shorten motor life.

Common Failure Modes

  • Overcurrent or overheat tripping — the drive unit reports motor overload after heavy-duty cycles.
  • Encoder / resolver feedback loss — axis 2 shows position drift or alarms during homing.
  • Holding brake failure — the upper arm sags or drops immediately when the servo is switched off.
  • Abnormal noise or vibration from axis 2 — typically caused by worn pinion teeth, bearing damage, or contamination inside the motor.
  • Insulation degradation or ground fault — the axis-2 drive trips the moment the motor is enabled, especially common in foundry cells where heat and dust accelerate insulation aging.

Why Choose Us

  • Focused ABB robot spare-parts supplier covering servo motors, drive units, gearboxes, and teach pendants for IRB-series robots.
  • Each axis motor is inspected and tested (encoder signal, insulation resistance) before packing.
  • Cross-reference support — if your older unit was originally shipped under 3HAC056855-001 or 3HAC033163-001, we confirm compatibility against your robot serial number.
  • 12-month warranty with remote technical support for installation and commissioning questions.
  • Multiple payment methods accepted — PayPal, T/T, and Alibaba Trade Assurance.
