Design Purpose

ABB does not feed an IRC5 cabinet from one large supply. Generation and distribution are separate boards, and this is the distribution one. It also means the controller can usually tell you which part of the power chain has dropped rather than simply going dark.

That split gives maintenance a short diagnostic rule. Symptoms that appear on drives or motor circuits point at this board; symptoms that appear on I/O, sensors or logic point at the DSQC 661. In practice the two are often ordered by mistake because their part numbers sit next to each other — so it is worth confirming which half of the chain your fault pattern actually points to before you buy.

Before you remove this board: mains-derived voltages are present on the distribution board whenever the upstream supply is live, even with the controller switched off. Common Failure Modes

  • Drive stage dead while the logic side stays alive — a distribution fault typically shows up on the drive and control domain rather than on I/O.
  • Repeated overcurrent trips on one branch — the branch protection is doing its job, which usually means a load or a wiring fault behind it.
  • Blown internal fuse — find the reason before replacing, or the replacement will go the same way.
  • Intermittent loss of power to one subsystem — plug connections that have worked loose or carbonised through years of cabinet vibration.
  • Burn marks, discolouration or a hot spot at a connector or terminal position on the board.
  • Whole cabinet dead with no indication — if the upstream supply checks out, this board and the DSQC 661 are the two to test next.
