Industrial Applications

  • Electronics manufacturing equipment — pick-and-place heads, dispensing valves, inserters and semiconductor handling stages that need fast settling and repeatable positioning.
  • Packaging and converting machinery — film feed, sealing, cutting and labelling axes synchronised over the MECHATROLINK-II network.
  • Small robots, gantries and precision X-Y stages driven by 200 W class Sigma-5 rotary servomotors.
  • Machine tools and metalworking equipment — auxiliary axes, tool changers, indexers and feed drives.
  • Inspection, test and measuring equipment where high resolution and smooth low-speed motion matter.
  • Multi-axis retrofit projects: replacing a single failed SERVOPACK on an existing MECHATROLINK-II machine without re-engineering the whole axis.

Tell us the machine, the axis and the motor model and we confirm whether this 200 W rating and interface are the right match before you order.

Design Purpose

The SGDV SERVOPACK is the amplifier stage between the motion controller and the servomotor. On this MECHATROLINK-II reference model the host controller sends motion commands over the network rather than as pulses or an analog voltage; the amplifier converts those commands into precisely regulated motor current using IGBT-based PWM with sine-wave current control, and closes the loop with serial encoder feedback coming back from the motor. The job is not simply to vary speed — it is to hold position, regulate speed and limit torque accurately and repeatedly. That is the fundamental difference from the variable-frequency drives in this catalog: a VFD varies the speed of an induction motor for fans, pumps and conveyors, while this servo amplifier closes a high-resolution loop around a permanent-magnet rotary servomotor.

The rating defines its place. At 200 W output and 1.6 A continuous, this unit serves the small-axis end of the Sigma-5 range — light loads, small mechanisms, feeders and indexing drives — not large press or gantry axes. Selection has to match three things at once: the servomotor model, the command interface your controller expects, and the encoder cabling. Within the same 1.6 A rating, order code 11 is the MECHATROLINK-II variant while 01 is the analog voltage / pulse train variant, so two amplifiers of identical power are not interchangeable on the same machine.

The final letter is the design revision order. This unit is revision A; SGDV-1R6A11B is the same rating and interface at revision B. Because revision changes can carry configuration differences, the full order code on your existing unit should be matched rather than substituted on power rating alone — send us the nameplate and we confirm it.

One design point matters when planning the installation: this rating has no internal regenerative resistor. For axes with high inertia, vertical loads or frequent emergency stops, an external regenerative resistor is required and is not supplied with the SERVOPACK.

Before you order and before you install
  • Match the motor: this is a Yaskawa Sigma-5 servo amplifier rated 200 W / 1.6 A at 200–230 V AC, built for rotary servomotors of the Sigma-5 series (SGMJV, SGMPS). Send us your motor nameplate so we can confirm the pairing.
  • Confirm the command interface: this is the MECHATROLINK-II reference model. If your controller issues analog voltage or pulse-train commands, this is the wrong variant — tell us your controller type and we will point you to the correct interface code.
  • Check the revision letter: this unit is design revision A. Do not substitute SGDV-1R6A11B or SGDV-1R6A01A on power rating alone — send us the full order code on your existing unit and we confirm the equivalent.
  • Plan the regenerative resistor: the 1R6A rating has no built-in regenerative resistor and none is included. High-inertia loads, vertical axes and frequent emergency stops need an external resistor at terminals B1/B2. Tell us the load and duty cycle and we size it with your quote.
  • Power safety: servo amplifiers store energy in the DC bus. Disconnect all supply phases and wait for the bus to discharge (per the Yaskawa manual) before any wiring, inspection or service. Installation and commissioning must be performed by qualified personnel.
  • Plan for commissioning: parameters must be set for your motor and mechanics and auto-tuning should be run before the axis goes into production. Back up the existing parameter set before swapping the amplifier, and verify the network address, communication cycle and termination on the MECHATROLINK-II line.
  • Confirming the details: send us your part number and we confirm enclosure rating, operating temperature, dimensions, net weight and country of origin for your unit before you order.
  • Confirm the condition with us: tell us whether you need new or used before ordering.

Common Failure Modes

  • Overvoltage or regenerative overload alarm — frequent emergency stops, vertical axes and high-inertia loads push regenerated energy back into the DC bus. Because this rating has no internal regenerative resistor, a correctly sized external resistor is usually the fix.
  • Overcurrent alarm — a shorted motor or encoder cable, a grounded motor winding or a mechanically jammed load drives protective shutdown.
  • Encoder error or feedback loss — damaged encoder wiring, contamination or electrical noise interrupts the closed loop, leaving the axis unable to hold position.
  • Main-circuit supply error or undervoltage alarm — supply dips, loose terminals or a failed contactor drop the bus below the amplifier's threshold.
  • MECHATROLINK-II communication fault — a wrong station address, a changed communication cycle, missing termination or disturbed cabling leaves the axis not ready after replacement.
  • Thermal fault / overheating — blocked ventilation, high ambient temperature or a heatsink loaded with dust raises internal temperature on these fanless units.
  • Parameter loss or servo-not-ready — cleared or corrupted parameters leave the amplifier unable to enable the axis after a swap.

If your amplifier displays a specific alarm code, send us the exact code together with the servomotor model, the controller type and the load description — we will help diagnose the fault and quote the matched replacement.
