Design Purpose

The unit does three jobs on the DC link. When several axes accelerate at once it delivers current so the bus does not sag. When those axes decelerate it absorbs the regenerated energy so the bus does not climb into an overvoltage trip. In between, it filters ripple so the servo current loops work against a clean, stable bus. In practical terms it protects the power semiconductors in the drive units from the voltage excursions that a multi-axis robot produces on every cycle.

It is also a deliberate wear item. Electrolytic capacitors lose capacitance and gain internal resistance as they age, and heat accelerates that process. A unit that has drifted far enough will still measure "present" but will no longer hold the bus during peaks, which is why bus-related faults on an older controller often lead back here rather than to the drive module.

Safety note: the DC link retains a hazardous voltage after the controller is switched off. Before touching the unit, isolate and lock off the supply, allow the discharge time specified for your cabinet, and confirm with a calibrated meter that the terminals are at a safe potential. Do not rely on the absence of an indicator lamp.
