Industrial Applications

  • Small fans, blowers and pumps on a 400 V three-phase supply where variable-speed control replaces throttling or a fixed-speed starter.
  • Conveyors, feeders and small material-handling sections that need soft starting and adjustable line speed.
  • Packaging machines, mixers and small process equipment built around a sub-1 kW motor.
  • OEM control panels where a compact drive with a local keypad and potentiometer keeps commissioning simple.
  • HVAC auxiliaries and building services supplied from a 400 V three-phase board.
  • Like-for-like replacement of a failed V7 drive in an existing machine, where keeping the same series avoids re-engineering the panel and wiring.

Design Purpose

The V7 (VS-606V7) is Yaskawa's compact general-purpose inverter — the small-frame drive that fits where a full-size industrial VFD is more than the duty needs. It targets the bottom of the power range: this unit is rated for motors up to 0.4 kW at 1.8 A output on a three-phase 400 V supply, with a 1.4 kVA inverter capacity. That is the size class used for single small motors inside a machine or panel, not for a plant-level drive.

Two design choices define how it is used on the plant floor. First, the drive carries a digital operator with a frequency-setting potentiometer (JVOP-140), so speed can be set and monitored directly on the front of the unit without an external reference signal — which is why the V7 was widely specified for stand-alone machines and local operator control. Second, the braking transistor is built in, so adding the optional braking resistor raises regenerative torque to roughly 150% for axes that decelerate frequently; without it the continuous regenerative torque is about 20%.

In this catalog the V7 sits apart from the other Yaskawa drives by size and generation. The J1000 is the newer compact V/f-only micro-drive, the A1000 is the high-end vector platform, and the G5 is the established general-purpose vector family. The V7 is the compact predecessor: sine wave PWM with V/f and voltage-vector control over a 0.1–400 Hz range, 150% overload for one minute, and programmable accel/decel up to 6000 s. Because it is a 400 V class unit with a Japan-domestic-standards design code, the order code must match your supply voltage and the original specification before it is energized; it is not a drop-in for a 200 V V7 or a J1000 of similar rating.

Before you order and before you install
  • Confirm the voltage class: this is a Yaskawa V7 drive, order code CIMR-V7AA40P4, rated three-phase 380–460 V input, 0.4 kW / 1.4 kVA / 1.8 A output, rated input current 2.4 A. Do not apply it to a 200 V supply — the 200 V class V7 carries a different code.
  • Confirm the design code: the "A" in CIMR-V7AA40P4 denotes Japan domestic standards in the VS-606V7 nameplate tables; the alternative is "T" for Asian standards. If you are replacing an existing unit, match the full code on the nameplate rather than the power rating alone.
  • Control wiring hazard — official warning: the V7 ships initialized for 2-wire control (n001 = 10). Entering an initialization code resets all parameters. If the drive is wired for 3-wire control and 2-wire initialization is applied, the motor may run in reverse with no run command applied, which can cause equipment damage or personal injury. Verify your control wiring before using the initialization function.
  • Discharge the DC bus before service: per the V7 manual, do not touch circuit components until the main input power is off; the status LEDs and digital operator display go out when bus voltage falls below 50 VDC, and you must then wait a further five minutes. Do not connect or disconnect wiring with the input power on. Work must be done by qualified electrical personnel.
  • Enclosure and environment: ratings 0P1 to 3P7 are IP20 open chassis (IP00 with the covers removed) per the manual. Install inside a suitable control cabinet with adequate ventilation and clearance, and keep the heatsink clear of dust.
  • Check unconfirmed data: cooling method, dimensions, net weight and country of origin are not consistently published for this model — read them from the unit nameplate before you order.
  • Confirm the condition with us: tell us whether you need new, used or refurbished before ordering.

Common Failure Modes

  • Overcurrent or ground-fault trip — a shorted motor cable, grounded winding or jammed load drives the unit into protective shutdown. Related troubleshooting: see our article on "Yaskawa V7 Drive Overcurrent Fault Troubleshooting".
  • DC-bus overvoltage or undervoltage alarms — regenerative load, a weak supply or a missing reactor swings the bus out of range. Related troubleshooting: see our article on "Yaskawa V7 DC Bus Overvoltage and Undervoltage Alarms Explained".
  • Overtemperature trip from a stalled cooling fan or dust-packed heatsink — the usual cause of summer shutdowns on small panel-mounted drives. Related troubleshooting: see our article on "Yaskawa V7 Cooling Fan and Heatsink Overheat Trip Fix".
  • DC-bus capacitor ageing — electrolytic capacitors lose capacitance with heat and years of service, causing intermittent trips and weak bus hold-up. Related troubleshooting: see our article on "Yaskawa VFD DC-Bus Capacitor Aging Diagnosis".
  • IGBT / power module failure — sustained overload, output short circuit or poor cooling destroys the output stage. Related troubleshooting: see our article on "Yaskawa AC Drive IGBT Module Failure Diagnosis".
  • Digital operator or potentiometer failure — the JVOP-140 keypad and its frequency-setting potentiometer are mechanical wear items; a worn potentiometer gives an unstable or drifting speed reference. Related troubleshooting: see our article on "Yaskawa V7 Digital Operator JVOP-140 Setup and Potentiometer Failure Fix".
  • Lost or wrong parameters after initialization — applying the wrong 2-wire / 3-wire initialization resets every setting and can reverse motor rotation. Related troubleshooting: see our article on "Yaskawa V7 Parameter Initialization and 2-Wire 3-Wire Control Setup".
