The unit is the power stage of the IRC5 drive system. It takes the rectified DC bus voltage and converts it into the precisely controlled, variable-frequency AC signals that drive the robot's axis motors. As the main drive unit, it carries the base axis group; where a robot needs more axes than the standard count, or where several manipulators share one controller under MultiMove, up to three additional DSQC 664 drive units can be added alongside it. Because it sits directly in the motion power path, a failed main drive unit tends to be more disruptive than an I/O or communication fault — it typically halts the whole cell rather than degrading it. Supplying it as a complete module allows a failed unit to be swapped as one assembly, and the IRC5 main computer and axis computer reinitialise communication with the new unit on restart without software configuration.
Safety note: this unit handles high-voltage DC bus power.
